Network Nightmare!

i have a small home network which i put in my self, it connects 3 computers (mine and two others), a printer and a modem throu a 8 port hub, and for a time, all was well. a few days a go my computer was playing silly buggers, so in way of an electronic slap, i decided to reformat it and start a fresh. which is what i did, i intalled win 2k pro, and installed all my drivers, and all's well, but when i click to go online, it wont contect to my modem, all the other comptuers are fine, they can still you the modem no prob's which is how i'm writing this now, if i uplugged the modem from the hub i can talk to teh other computers adn share file so on and so forth, but when i plug the bugger back in all the other computers connect to it and receive the new ip's but i dont, i have made sure that i'm assigned an ip automactily in my settings but it just aint working, i'm really at a loose end here. i've tried unpluggin my self from the network and pluggin back in, i've triued a new slot on the hub, can any one help?

Do you have the connection set to obtain an IP address automatically in the Control Panel?

yup.
i'm using win2k pro SP4
i've gone into the ip settings and made sure that i obtain an ip automacticly, but still no joy.

You say that when you hook up the PC to the hub and disconnect the cable modem, everything works? That's odd.

Do exactly that (disconnect the cable modem and hook up the PC) and at the command prompt, type "ipconfig /all" and post back what it says.

the proper way to set up that system is to have the modem connect to the wain port of a router and then connect the switching hub to the router and then all the other devices connect to the switching hub, you will save yourself a lot of headaches that way

thats a fair point but however i dont have the money to buy anything now, so it really isnt an option.

I don't belive you can hook your modem into a hub.

what you need to do is hook the modem into one of the computers and install a second nic into the same computer that will go to the hub

mate, i can, i have, it worked perfectly for over 5 months, but now i have a problem, i'm not sure wat to do.

Actually, his ADSL modem is a modem/router, and he can directly connect it to a hub.
