adding HDD

I am trying to add a 6gb HDD as a slave to my current (814 MB) HDD, but when i install it (correct jumpers etc., have tried several times...) it comes up saying no operating system, i think it is reading the intended slave as master although the jumpers are correct. They are 2 different types of HDD's if that has anything to do with it. Also, i keep breaking the IDE cables that get stuck in the HDD (black plastic part breaks off in HDD) and have to get them out, any ideas of how to do this (i havent had problems before only with this HDD) or if there are any cables that are stronger?

Are sure the cable end matches the HDD plug? I don't understand how it could break of in the HDD.

the IDE cables have little black plastic parts that you put into the HDD, these are made of two sides, one with little metal peices that go throught the grey cable, when i pull them out of the HDD no matter how i do it they break in half.

If I read your other post correctly, you have one WD and one Quantum? They don't get along together at all on the same cable.

814MB HD? That's pretty old technology. Are they even able to run on the same cable/interface?

IDE is IDE, the interface has been around for over 10 years.

Put them on separate cables as masters, if the WD is standalone (i.e. no slave) you have to remove the jumper. Slave your opticals to the hard drives.

Well thats kind of what my question is about GLC, are they so old that they aren't compatible with one another on the same IDE cable?

Its the nature of the older Quantum drives - they do not like sharing the IDE with another brand hard drive. Seagates can have this problem too.

Actually glc, i was the one with the Quantum and WD, so you are saying that I won't be able to slave the Quantum with the WD?

I've heard of newer 80 wire cables not liking older drives. Maybe sabotage an older system for old-style cables.But follow glc's advice regarding seperate channels first, with hard drives as masters and optical drives as slaves

Yes, you did read my post correctly i am using a quantum and one of my W.D.'s. thanks for the help...so basically i leave my WD where it is...slave the CD drive to it (no software change just jumpers and wires?), put the quantum as the master where the CD drive was on the other IDE cable, then slave the burner i will be adding to the new HDD once it is installed and formatted?

Ok i figured it out, i got everything working with the HDD's as masters on seperate channels and the CD and CDRW as slaves to them, thanks for the help
