We have two computers
(see PC info below). One
PC is mine and the newest
one belongs to my young
daughter. I am in the
process of Wire Networking
these two computers
together.

Is there is any way to totally
control my daughter's PC
from my own PC?


1st My PC 4 years old:

Dell Dimension XPS
Pentium 3, 598 MHz , 384
RAM, a 80 GB & a 20 GB
HARD DRIVE,
with Win XP Home Edition

2nd My daughter's PC
brand new:

Dell Dimension 2400
Pentium 4 , 533 MHz, 128
MB RAM, 40 GB HARD
DRIVE
with WIN XP Home Edition

http://www.realvnc.com is a software that will do exactly what you want. hope that helps

What do you mean by "Totally Control?" Windows XP Professional has a Remote Administrator Capability and there are many Add-on Remote Administrator Programs available. These will allow you to log on to a target computer from just about anywhere.
Since these two computers are on the same Local Area Network, and I take it that you are wanting to track where your Daughter is going on the Internet, I would just enable File Sharing and then allow the "C" Drive on the target computer to be shared with your computer. This will give you access to all of the Documents and Settings on the target.

I have Windows XP Home Edition on both computers. I think I know what you are saying but I have heard from a few people that the program on Windows is a last resort, in fact some even hate it. I am looking at other options. But thanks for your reply.

i would agree that the one in xp is a last resort, in fact, correct me if i am wrong, but i think the xp oneis only in pro (don't have home to check it out). but i use real and tight vnc and i like them both

Yes, Craig, I found the VNC online. There is even Shareware for it. It sure looked promising to me until I searched for instructions on how to use it step by step. The instructions I have found are confusing and over my head. Did you have trouble getting started with it? Thanks for your valuable time. :< )

no, it was not hard to set up at all. i just installed the server on the computer i wanted to be able to view and the viewer on the other computer. i have not run it in awhile, but i will go and look at my settings that i have for viewing over the lan. will post back in a little bit.

edit: here i am telling you to use real or tight, and i am using ultravnc. if i remember correctly, it is free. it has been so long since i used it that i forgot what i had, sorry bout that. i will go through it for a bit and post back and give you some suggestions

well, since i currently have ultra on my computer, that is the one i can offer the best assisstance in. however, i have used the others and would be happy to install them and get them up and running if you would like to use another one. as far as the server goes, that is what you need running in the background to allow incoming connections. sorry i have not taken more time to properly address this, but i have been working with a laptop for the past day and a half that has not been cooperating. i finally got it up and running and so i have been focusing my time on that.

To use any of the VNC variants, RealVNC, tightVNC, UltraVNC, the process is dirt simple. Download the program, and run the install. Setup a password and keep the rest of the defaults, and you're on your way.

If you have a broadband router, you'll have to open port 5900 for the VNC client or 5800 for the JAVA client (IE based). That's about it...

Craig please take your time on this. I ordered my Wired Network in a box on the 19th and it may not be here until after Christmas.

I am assuming that I must have a Network up and running before I can use any of the programs you speak of.

It would be so wonderful for you to guidie me through this experience. It would indeed be my biggest Christmas gift!

I am aware of VNC but what is the difference between RealVNC, tightVNC, UltraVNC?

RealVNC was the original version, tightVNC added some improvements. The latest is UltraVNC, it has some significant improvements, and is the one under active development right now. They're all from the same base, and they're all free software, so I use UltraVNC. If you search on the three, you can visit the sites and see what's going on with each of them. :)
