Router doesn't like hotmail

I'm useing a 2wire HomePortal, http://www.2wire.com/home/hp_index.html I just bought a linksys router model BEFSR41.
Here's the setup:
Phone Jack>phoneline>
Modem>ethernet cable>
Linksys router internet port>
Linksys router port1>ethernet cable>
NIC card

Now here's my problem. I can't get onto hotmail or post messages here at pcmech when my computeris connected through the linksys router, if I plug it strait into the modem its fine. Is there anything wrong in my setup that could be causeing this problem? Or does anyone know anything els the could be causeing this?

been useing linksys routers for years, set up many lans all over the country with them and have yet to have any problem with them.
useing hotmail and instant messenger with live video and file transfers, all work great,
so I can only feel that your two wire portal bust be the problem some how, or you got something confiqured wrong

I can't change my modem, so is there anyother way I can share DSL between 2 computers? They will be right next to each other.

I had that problem with my Linksys router. I have LAN available but it wouldt let me use the internet. What I did to fix this was that I changed my WAN MAC Address from all 0's to the correct value.

How do I do that and whats the correct value?

Plug your modem to your computer so you have internet. If you are using windows xp then go to your control panel>Network and Internet Options>Network Connections then go to whatever your internet is and right click and click on status. The right tab will say Support click on that then there will be an option that will say Details... click on that and it is the numbers and letters on the right of where it says Physical Address, it will be in stets of 2 characters ex: 00-05-AF-34-FB-AD. Write this number down and turn off your computer. Connect your modem to your router and to the computer and then open an Internet Explorer or whatever you use for a browser and type in 192.168.1.1 (this is your usual default router settings page) and when it asks for a user name and password leave the username blank and type in "admin" without quotes for your password. Somewhere under the Advanced Options (it varies depending on which router you have) it will have a value for your WAN MAC address. Just fill in the numbers and letters. BTW Ive done this with both my wired and wireless Linksys routers and thats how I got my internet to work. Good Luck hope this helps :)

Nevermind I found it by going to dos and typeing ipconfig /all

When I go to the router setup the only place I can put in mac address is by enabling MAC clone service. Is this the right place?

I finaly got around to looking for more info on 2wire homeportals. I found a forum just for them, and found my answer.

A: I want to share my DSL connection. I've read that I can share my connection by connecting a router to my DSL modem, but the 2Wire 1000S manual says that I can only connect a hub or a switch to the 1000S. I've also read that a hub and switch can't share a single IP address but a router can. What should I do?

Connect the 2Wire Modem to a hub or a switch. The 2Wire Modem IS a router and is configured by default to be a DHCP server, which means that it will assign private LAN-side IPs to computers setup to ask for them (DHCP clients). Windows computers are by default setup for DHCP. Connect your computers to the hub or switch and reboot. The computer should pickup its IP from the router and be able to surf. You can designate specific IPs on specific computers on the LAN side if needed. If all you are doing is surfing/email/etc.. you don't need to specify your IPs.

What should I get a switch or a hub?

Can you recomend one that circuit city has. Thats were I got my router which I plan on returning and I can only get store credit because I payed with a gift card.

you want to get a switching hub.

there are hubs and switches

the switching hub is the best of them all,
a switch is the same as a switching hub.

they come in many sizes 4,8, and 16 port
you may want a 4 port unless you plan on having a lot more systems on it.

Yes this is the place. Just give the router a couple more tries before going to a switch or hub. I like routers better because they are hardware firewalls. :)

yes a router is the best way to go, but you said your modem is a router, didn't you ?

I guess I'll go buy circuit city tommorow and exchange the router for the switch and then I'm finaly going to see the new Lord of The Rings movie.!

I just put in the linksys switch and everything is working perfectly for once.
