I've built PC's for two of my nieces in the last few months. One has cable internet and the last one uses DSL. Thats the one we're having trouble with. The PC is Intel 865 with P4/2.4C. 120GB WD HDD onboard graphics and sound. Pioneer multi format DVD writer and floppy. Win XP Home. I installed a Linkskey 10/100Mbps PCI Ethernet Card, Model LKF-5100+. She said that all she did on her old PC was plug the cord in and it worked. Not so with the new one. I used my US Robotics 5686E modem to download critical updates and activate windows so I know it works. She has run the setup wizard several times to no avail. I loaded Norton internet protection which came on the board setup disc. She says that when trying to connect she gets warnings from norton. Any ideas how I can help her get it up and running?

Did you have Norton Internet Security running when you connected and downloaded the updates?

Try uninstalling Norton Internet Security and see if it will connect. You can always reinstall if that isn't the problem.

Is the XP firewall on. Could be a conflict between the two.

Yes, I had the PC here at my home then and used my xternal modem to connect and download the updates. Norton kept asking me to permit the download. I told her to uninstall norton and try to set up the wizard again. She's also went to device manager and went back to earlier drivers for the nic card but it didn't help. I never thought about turning off the firwall in xp.
