Well i think i may be getting a DVD Burner for christmas

so can anyone recommend that best dvd burner out their for resonable price?

and what makes it good? if anything besides price/reliablity

DVD burners have come down quite a bit in price recently, so you'll be able to find a good one for under $200.

I hear the Pioneer A06 is a good multi-format burner. And the LG GSA-4040BI is supposed to be a good multi-format burner too. Not sure how good the new Sony DRU510A or DWU14A are now, maybe you can find some reviews on them.

I have an Optorite Dual Format and they work pretty good and it also has an 8MB cache. If it is as good as there CD-RW drives then it will be solid.

when you say multi format i am guessing you mean like + / - / ReWrite?

also this last question i am just lazy to look up lol..

about how long does it take to say backup a dvd movie?

what speed are they upto now on dvd burners? are they still at 4x or are they faster?

You will need a couple of freeware programs the first being DVD DeCrypter and the second is DVD Shrink.
DVD Shrink shrinks the DVD down to the single DVD-R or DVD+R Disk size. You do lose a little video quality but it is not noticable in most cases.

I've got the Pioneer 106 (A06?) and it's very good. It's even survived my young son posting a "foreign object" in it!

It's a popular drive and gets good reviews.

It takes about 15 minutes to burn a movie. BTW, don't get confused about the "4X". That's not the eqivalent of 4X on a CD-RW drive - it's a lot faster (about nine times I think).

To burn quality movies you only need programs like DVDXCOPY-XPRESS or CLONEDVD. Both excellent and simple to use.

Lite-On just released their 8x Dual format drive, the 811S, drive that runs for around $150 at newegg.

Well i was messing with my brothers DVD burner today and i made a copy of 1 of our movies. with DVDXCOPY :) that worked great thanks.

But it took a total of 4hrs and 45 minutes to backup.

It is an HP External DVD burner (4x) not sure the model


anyways i had it hooked up with USB and my pc that i did this on is only USB 1.1 instead of 2.0 like the burner was made for.

i figured this slowed it down.. if i ran it at USB 2.0 how long do you think it would take?

I have 2x LG GSA 4040b Super Multi Writers and they are terrific ! (they are a bit media pickey though, I only use Verbatim & Tayio Yuden & TDK media and have not has a single problem in about 70 burns, new firmware A302 just out)
However at this stage the writer with best media compatibility and burn quality is the Pioneer 106.
Both my Sony DRU500 & DRU510 were duds so i'm done with them.
NEC1300 with latest firmware is also a solid unit.
Samsung = NEC1300
Iomega = NEC1300
Fujitsu Siemens = NEC1300

Nope, it should take about 15 minutes to copy the DVD image to the hard drive and about another 15 minutes to backup the movie.

If it's taking that long then clearly something is not working correctly.
