I have a Shuttle AN35N-400 board and I can't get the sound to work. It says it is a Realtek AC'97 but when I run Win98Se it finds a NVidia sound. I tried installing the NVidea and then the Realtek and although each one listed with ne errors in device manager whenever I go to control panel and sounds everything is greyed out and when I run soundman I get no device loaded. What am I doing wrong?

Uninstall the drivers that you have already installed and use the motherboard cd to install the driver, the board is listed with Realtek ALC650, 6 channel audio.

Agree with Redo40.
But I'm more radical
The drivers you want are on the cd for your mobo, don't use anything else till you put them through a trial.
The AC'97 sound is also on my Soltek and, so far, I've got no reason to complain.
It sounds like you used the soundstorm instead of the proper ones.

Everytime I delete the device the NVidia installs when I boot up again. How do I remove the old and use the cd to install the new one?

I just tried removing the device in device mngr and then using the mb cd but it installed the same Nvidia driver. In control panel multimedia there is no audio playback device listed.

I have now installed the realtek drivers and still I have no playback device. The device is listed as Realtek AC'97 Audio.

Go into the bios and make sure the on board sound is enabled.
Then, and I hate to suggest this, reformat and install the chipset drivers, along with the AC'97 audio.
You will see the NVidia (tm) but that's okay.
Make sure you've hooked up your speakers correctly, check advanced Audio properties in sounds and Audio devices.
