Ati Radeon 9200?

Hey guys,

I'm here with yet another question. Does the ATI Radeon 9200 video card support DirectX 9.0b? I looked at the card on newegg and it says that it is fully compatible with 8.1. I'm not sure what that means, is 8.1 the highest DirectX version it can support?

You can install DX9.0b on your system, but the card doesn't support it.

i take it you are going to be doing some gaming? personally i would not recommend a radeon 9100/9200 to anyone. they are slower than some of the older cards, such as the 8500 and 9000 pro which are actually still pretty good performers for the price.

if you can afford it, get at least a 9500 pro or 9600 XT (both do dx9 i THINK). if not, get an 8500 or 9000 pro. do a search for benchmarks and what not, you will see that the 9100/9200 pretty much just suck.

I thought the 9100 was the older 8500. They changed he name to 9100 b/c it outperformed the newer 9000. :confused:

I knew this was going to get confusing...

the 9100 is the 8500/LE minus the DVI and S-Video outs. the 8500LE is a "lite edition" of the 8500. the only difference between the two, to my knowledge, is 230/230 clock for the 8500LE and 250/250 clock for the 8500. funny though, because you can run an 8500LE at 250/250 all day like it was designed for it. :D

you are right about it outperforming the 9000, though, but that isn't saying much. the 9000 non-pro is pretty slow...also the 9200 is SLOWER than the 9100 by quite a lot. i believe ATI also raised the clock speeds on the 9100 slightly over that of an 8500LE.

i may be wrong about this, but i heard somewhere that the 9200 is actually a 9000 :confused:

so now that i have looked over some more information, let me rephrase something.....i would not recommend a radeon 9200. the 8500/LE/9100 would be the bare MINIMUM that i would recommend. if you are going for this bracket of cards, be sure to get the 8500(LE) if you want DVI/SVideo outs.

i still am having trouble understanding ATi's numbering schemes lol....but i just found this...very informative:

also if you read through some of the benchmarks, it's just more proof that AGP 8x means hardly anything. a lot of the 4x cards are in fact faster. :)

The 9200 as stated above is not DX9 supported; And I wouldn't reccomend the card if your going to game. Do you have a budget? A 9600Pro is a good bang for the buck Graphics card for ~150 USD: http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=14-156-010&catalog=48&depa=1

I owned a 9200 Pro for some time, and it is compatible with dx 9(at least it says so), I never used it though because I dont really game all that much
