FSBs and necessary CPU speeds

Ok, I want to replace my P4 1.4 ghz processor with a 2.8 ghz. I'm not sure it will work, though, as the website for my particular mainboard, the MSI 645 Combo (http://www.msi.com.tw/program/products/mainboard/mbd/pro_mbd_detail.php?UID=404) is rather unclear, and in fact says:

"Supports 400MHz FSB, can be auto negotiated to 533MHz through BIOS for better system efficiency"

in once place, yet under 'FSB' it says:

"Supports 400MHz FSB."

Now, My main dilemma is that the fastest P4 I could find at this fsb was 2.4 ghz. Is that fast enough to last a few years? Or should I bite the bullet, upgrade the mobo, and get a fast cpu, too? OR, can this mobo support a 533mhz fsb? Thanks for any clarity/insight you can provide.

Your board doesn't officially support a 533Mhz bus processor.. so all one can say about installing one is... it MIGHT work... but it might not. If you want to go above the 400Mhz FSB, you're probably better off to get a new motherboard.

Ok, what about using a 2.4 ghz? is that powerful enough to last a couple years? or is it worth it to do a complete overhaul?

I would say if your not a power user it would be just fine with a 400 FSB 2.4
