godforsaken pop ups

Hey folks. I have cable, but when I'm not even on the internet I get pop ups. Most of the time they are a series of the samething. Just wondering if some sort of spyware. Or what I should do to stop it?

Also this is a brand new sony vaio notebook. Thats why it pisses me off this bad. One more thing this happened on my other puter aswell. Same cable wire if that helps.

What O/S are you running?

If it is W2K or XP, you need to turn Messenger off.

Download and run Ad Aware.
I just did this on a friends PC.
He was getting pop ups all the time even when the modem was disconnected.
It turns out there was over 1000 pieces of spyware on his machine which not only caused the pop ups but slowed the machine to a crawl and would not allow it to shut down

another good program is spybot: search and destroy
you can use it along with adaware for the best cleaning of popups..
also run a virus scan.

Also, install some kind of pop-up blocker afterwards. Google toolbar is a good one, and it's free.

Try Mozilla 1.5 or Netscape 7.1.
Both have the feature to turn off unrequested windows.
I use them both and they work well!
