i`m going to be setting up a workstation, most likely W98 on a W2000 server. what i need and fairly quick is if someone can direct me to a good refence book that covers W2000 servers. my previous networking experience is with Novell and that was limited.

any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

You are not alone.

I have W2K advanced server, and am clueless. I know they DONT make a W2K server for dummies book.

I have used a few good books. Minasi writes a good one, the MS press book is very good. I have also used another(just can't think of the name or author right now). Try http://www.bookpool.com their prices are usually better than amazon, and better "tech" selection.

If you want a fairly complete set of references, look at the the win2k server resource kit. Not cheap but the cd full of server tools is worth the price of the kit.

i want to thank everyone for the replies. i`ve decided on Mark Minsai`s "Mastering Windows 2000 Server (Second Edition)".

found it at Amazon for $39.95

just want to mention that i recieved the book and this is a tech book written in a manner that you WANT to read it cover to cover. it takes a "non NT" person like myself and delivers the subject matter in a way that not only tells you the why of the system but also gives you the information to perform real life situations immediately. not overly simplistic and not overly technical. i intend to buy more of his books.

HIGHLY recommended for anyone who has to administer or deal with W2k networks.

If this link doesn't provide the information you need, I don't know what will. Remember, Windows 2000 has a built-in help application which is supposed to answer any question you may have about the product, and it also contains information you can't find anywhere else.

Good luck!

Best book I think is The Ultimate Windows 2000 System Administrator's Guide by G. Robert Williams, Mark Wall.

Get the 'Administrator's Companion' book for Windows 2000! It rocks!! In addition to that the 'smaller' version is the 'pocket' version.

Do not buy a SAM'S teach yourself book on this topic - no good!
