I'm not sure what happened, as other people in my household use the computer. All i know is that my sygate firewall program had been messed up somehow, as a message told me some of its components were missing. Then, I found out I could no longer connect to the internet, no matter which web broswer i was using (I use firebird and IE). My cable modem works fine, as i can connect to the net by connecting my modem to my other computer. I think i'm able to send out information as well, as my computer doesn't indicate any problems with my connections and I can copy files from it through my network on my other computer. Please, any help would be appreciated greatly.

I'm no software expert, but since you don't know what components were mixxing from the firewall program, I'd uninstall it and re-install it.

sounds like some settings got changed in you firewall ,
you need to check them ouy and look for something that is not the way you had it set.

the thing is, i can no longer run my firewall program. So i got rid of it...yet the problem is still there, even without the firewall.

Try a few things:

1) Run a full system anti-virus scan, especially from a bootable antivirus disk if you have one. Just to rule that out. There are a few viruses/worms out that wreak havoc on Internet connections (like qhosts and such)

2) Like Sonic suggested, uninstalling/reinstalling your firewall should help restore any missing modules. Some firewalls don't uninstall well, and some have "clean tools" = small utilities you can download from their website to help remove any leftovers before you reinstall. Check at SyGate's website from your other computer & then try the uninstall/reinstall.

3) When you moved the cable modem back to your original PC (after testing it on the other), did you reset it & release/renew with ipconfig? (if you're using Win2k/XP)

See how it goes, and post again if you're still not connecting.

How do I do that?

I've already uninstalled the firewall and reinstalled it, but the problem persists.

Most cable modems will reset simply by powering off the unit, waiting a few minutes, and powering it back on.

If you are using Win2k/XP, in the Start/Run box, type "cmd" (without the quotes - it stands for "command interpreter"). At the command prompt, type ipconfig/release. Wait a few seconds, and then type ipconfig/renew. You can then close your command box by typing "exit", and try your internet connection again. If necessary, in IE's "Advanced" tab in "Internet Options", select "Detect Network settings automatically".

See if that gets you connected.

[If you're still not connecting, comb through your firewall settings & see if you need to allow access manually]

[p.s. ... is the cable modem connected to a router? Do other computers share the Internet connection? If yes to both of these: can any of the computers connect to the Internet? And did you re-setup the router?]

wow...who would've thought such a simple solution would've worked. All i had to do was unplug and replug my cable modem. Many thanks to all of you! you've saved me from many headaches.
