The link has been pretty well defined. It seems that this animal carries the virus.
But there hasn't been, so far as I have seen, any attempt to understand the evolutionary niche that it occupies or what effect their eradication will have.

Think it's a misnomer to consider these critters "cats" as we in the US know cats. They're a relative of the mongoose and look like a weasel. Hardly the domestic or wild cats of the US. Destroying the source of SARS is similar to destroying the cattle that have the potential to spread "Mad Cow".

I have heard a raccoon-like omnivorous mammal of Mexico and the southwestern United States having a long bushy tail with black and white rings called a civet cat. They also stink, and are often raised for their scent glans for use in perfumes.

Why would you wish a deadly disease on people doing their jobs? These aren't house cats. It's a mongoose like critter raised as food, just like we raise chickens, pigs and cattle. Asians may have a different culture and different food sources, but who are we to judge their methods of disease control? Better they stop it at it's source over there than allow in to spread world wide.
