Excellent Hard Drive repair tutorial. You may want pen and paper in hand to take notes.

I attempted this on a brand new Maxtor drive. When I was through with the process it was a Fijitsu drive (or at least acted like one).

What brand of torch is required to turn it into a WD?

Still remember the first one I took a part. I did it when we upgraded to a larger drive and thought the old one was no longer usefull. Believe me when I was done it was not usefull for anything.

for WD because they are quieter and propane will distorte the allignement of the platters. :)

It's interesting how Hard Drive fortunes rise and fall. About 4 years ago the IBM Deskstar was regarded as possibly the best drive you could buy; and the most recommended on this forum. I installed several of them in machines back then with no problems. Now they're regarded as junk.

Simple, Hitachi bought them!
