View Full Version : Need Antivirus and Firewall Suggestion
Hey everyone,
I need a new anti-virus program for my computer. What do you guys suggest? It needs to be non obstrusive and have a good updater.
Also, I have a dsl connection, do I need a firewall? What are the benefits? I am quite paranoid about internet security.
I think I'm either going to get AVG, eTrust, or NAV...

AVG is pretty good, and it's free, so that's a plus.
I'd suggest sygate for a firewall. There's so much "background noise" and people looking for unprotected computers nowadays that it is a very good idea to put up a firewall.

We've been discussion this topic on and off for a while now, try using the search feature on here, or just go through the forum, this has been asked at least once every 10 days. There is a similar thread called Poll:AntiVirus: Effectiveness in work (http://forum.pcmech.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=85851) that discusses the same topic.
Sry about that Statica. I can see how annoying it'd be for so many people to post separate topics on this. I read through your thread before, but I want to ask about the effectiveness of a firewall program. That thread discussed good anti-virus programs but what about firewall programs?
What is a good firewall program and what can it do for me?

Zone Alarm is a very good firewall for ease of use and effectivness. Plus its free. The Pro version of it is also very good. It gives you more options. Another very good firewall is what I use, Sygate. If you want the complete package(firewall/antivirus) Try eTrust. Its free for 1 year and a couple of people on this board have tried it and say its pretty good.

Forgot to mention, firewalls protect you(if setup properly) from unsolicitated request to connect to your PC. It also protects you from trojan horse programs from calling home. It is like a locks on your door, you don't want unwelcome people coming into your house so you lock the door and they can't come in. It's a must have in these days.
