Howdo I set up my own public proxy?

I need all of the details on how to set up my own public proxy through my home comp (PC) software, settings, requirements etc...thanx

For how many people?

The easiest to set up would be Apache (it has a basic proxy function), it doesn't support any type of authentication or caching, though.

For something more complex look at Squid (http://www.squid-cache.org/)

Also how much bandwidth do you have available on this connection? People will ony get as much speed as your upload can give them...

i have an RCA cable modem with comcast broadband internet... When I say public, i mean for me and my friends... not everyone... We need it because of a proxy called "Bess" that our school uses that blocks bad sites and illegal content. It's not that we need the bad stuff, but that's not all it blocks... email, games, google image search, fantasy sports, geocities sites, etc... we need help. We've been searching for other public proxies daily, and using those, but we can't always count on the same one to be functioning so it's tedious. I know it would be much easier to just have my own proxy so that I know when it's working, and when it's not. Hope this clears up any confusion. Also about apache... awhile ago when i was in the process of trying to teach myself PHP, this was a necessary tool for previewing code w/o uploading it to a server each time i wanted to confirm that i was doing the right thing. I couldn't find a real installation for it. A link would be great... (winXP pro) Thanx!!!:D

All you gotta do is go into httpd.conf and set "allow proxy requests" to yes instead of no. It will listen on whatever port(s) you set the webserver to listen on.
