I really do not know what my temps are since I only check them for about a one hour run time when I first built the computer. Generally Idle temps in the BIOS will be between 35 and 42 degrees C, but anything below 45 is good. Running temps can go as high as 65 degrees C.
In general as long as the computer is working properly with no lockups or reboots then the temps, no matter what they are, are fine.
Also software temp monitoring programs are not accurate and most will read high. I suggest that you uninstall any of these programs.
Finally, there is zero difference in the performance or life of a CPU running at 50 or 60 degrees C over one running at 35 degrees C.

I have a PII 400MHz with stock Intel heatsink, a 60mm exhaust fan plus the 80mm fan in a 235 watt Sparkle Power PSU and I have no idea what my temps are...and I really don't want to know.

I'm not a gamer so it's obviously not a gaming box, but it has run AutoCAD 14, Visual Basic 6, Adobe Photoshop 6, Office 2000 and a variety of other smaller programs. It also rips and burns CD's and surfs the net just fine.
Just because a computer isn't up to date or the fastest available doesn't mean it's useless. The usefulness of a computer is determined by the user, not it's age or speed. This computer still does everything I want it to, so it's still useful to me.

I never check my temps unless I'm having a problem, and even then, I usually figure out that its something else that causes the problem, not how hot/cool my CPU is running.

I used to check and I remember having 37C then when I got my Enermax psu it went down to 33/34C
Out of curiousity I set up a desktop fan to an open case on my p4 clocked to 3.29 at the time. At just the right angle it was 27 celcius according to asus probe. 32 according to bios. 29 according to my case lead. (Motherboard was 22 according to the probe)
Sadly with the cover back on its at around 34 idle according to the probe.
My computer is right near a central air vent. In the summer I'll set it up so the AC blasts the motherboard because I'm a giant nerd.

my computer runs between 30-50 C even under heavy load.

So true, our schools library recently ditched an apple something (probably II) it was over 15 years old and it was because of lack of parts.

i'm no genius in thermal sciences, but if heat rises, then shouldn't there be fans on top of a pc? i've seen some pc's that the owners have modded to mount a fan or 2 on top. why not market cases like that?

Geez, that thing must be an air conditioner! then again, I dont think AC units have that many fans :)

Haha, so I ordered a new system that I'm gonna put together on my own, and I'm pretty handy with a dremmel tool and whatnot; I really want to put all the parts in an old miniature coca cola fridge I have, and crank the temp down low. Of course I'd take all the food out of it. Do you think this could work on it's own for cooling? Maybe put some fans on the top to blow out hot air? Or what? I really am into this idea, what do you folks think?

It is possible to build a PC inside a fridge, but I never have and never would do it.

My CPU fan is a Speeze rated for my AMD 2500+
Case is a mid-tower modded to suppport 120mm intake and 62mm exhaust.....
I have a full RAID array with 3 scsi drives, 2 IDE drives 2 cd roms, an AGP and 3 PCIs filled currently
Current temp at default clock speed is
Case = 20c
CPU = 39c
Funny enough , I was getting 42c on the CPU until I made a slight mod to the exhaust fan and offset it about a 1/4 inch off the back panel.. I did this by taking small zip-ties and zipping it to the holes (its not seated or screwed in,, its floatinf a 1/4 inch off the hole...
another thing , was to cut out that aluminum sad excuse for a fan grill (exhaust doesnt need one unless you have a dog/kids)
yay I guess its time to OC just a bit... :)
KMART
35-41C CPU, I have 2 case fans both on the side, both blowing in, this is my first build, I didn't know any better, but the temps are OK so I'm leaving it as is.
Good exhuast airflow thru the front and back openings where other fans could go.
