outlook newsreader

I have win xp and office xp. I want to clear out the messages and headers in the news reader, but when I try it using the tools>options>maint. and then "clean up now" then I have clicked all of the buttons in that box and if I go to a newsgroup offline all of the headers and viewed messages are still there! The maint window says the folder is empty! What should I search for to find this stuff?
