Why even display it if we can't be trusted to delete our own post???.

It's displayed because that's how the vB template is set up and that's how the staff deletes posts. The staff his discussed post deletion and has decided that we do not want members to be able to delete posts. However, you DO have the option to EDIT a post up to 12 hours after posting.
