I had an old Viper 300, and when I played quake and had it in openGL mode the game was so dark it was unplayable, even with my monitor's brightness turned up all the way. I just upgraged my computer and put in a 3D Blaster Annihalator 2 MX which of course is the GeForce 2 MX chipset. Well low and behold quake is still dark in opengl. Looks ok in software mode, brightness wise, but I loose all the definition and special effects don't look as good. Is there any way to brighten up the opengl mode? I also have the brightness up all the way in the game's video screen.
TIA

Hi babylon5guy,

There should be a command called "gamma" or something similar, just turn that up until it looks good. If it still doesn't work, and you are talking about Quake 1/2, then you need to get idGamma:

http://www.g256.com/idgamma/

It creates a new pak file that makes everything brighter and look better.

Hope that helps.

Thanks DrZaius, it is Quake II. I'll play around with it and let you know.

WOW! DrZaius those idgamma drivers rock. Quake never looked so good! I haven't figured out how to get the mission packs to work yet but that shouldn't be that hard, I just didn't have time to fool with them too much. I couldn't find gamma in the Creative menu for my video card, they must call it something else. Thanks for the tip!:D

babylon5guy,

Glad it helped. You should check out this page which creates an config file with your own custom graphics and brightness settings if you want to "tweak" Q2 some more:

http://www.tweak3d.net/autoexec/quake2/english/

Also, for a FULL list of Q2 console commands check out:

http://www.planetquake.com/console/commands/quake_2.html

Hope that helps.
