Sata Drive to Raid [Archive]

I am currently running my PC with one 120g maxtor SATA drive. I am planning on purchasing another one and setting up a raid array. I would really like to be able to do this without reformatting or losing my windows install. If there is anyway to do this like ghosting the drive or something I would really appreciate the info.

.In order to do a Raid array,you'll have to redo the system and installation of OS and programs.
Raid 0 will write and read to drives as if it were one.
Raid 1 will mirror the master drive.

Most of the time, both drives' data is destroyed in order to synch them. Then you have to repartiton and format.

What motherboard do you have? If you have a board with the Intel ICH5-R southbridge, I believe you can set up a RAID 0 without loosing any data. Never tried it though.

This is my motherboard.
So I cant image the drive onto another harddrive and then reload it once my raid is set up?

It`s simple. Run a backup of your system on another drive, IDE will be fine. Install the second SATA drive and configure your RAID array and install your OS making sure to setup your partitions and logical drives the same as your original setup.

Once the new OS is installed and necesarry drivers installed, run a restore from your backup to the "original location".

There may be a little cleaning up to do, very minimal, and you`ll have to re-establish network connections, printers, etc. but you will have your system installed on your new array.

Ghosting may or may not work, I have no idea because I`ve always used the native MS backup to move systems from one computer to another, upgrade hardrives, etc. I like the "free" factor plus not having to depend on third party software.

Should you decide to use MS backup, be sure to backup "system state" also. Forgot to mention that.
