I saved an important Word document on a floppy disk. The computer I saved it from used Windows 98. I brought it home and popped it in my XP machine and it says "This disk is not formatted. Do you want to format it now?" Why does it say this??!! Does it have anything to do with XP/98? I need this file. I have had this problem with floppy disks before and it is very annoying.

I usually get that when they go bad.
There are floppy issues with XP for some reason. You could also be dealing with a floppy with bad sectors, or the 2 drives could be out of alignment with respect to each other.
I never use floppies for important stuff any more - I use a CDR or a USB memory key.

I figured it out. I had two disks with me. One was blank, the other I used. I was trying to put the blank one in. I hate floppies as well but the computer didn't have an internet connection, CD burner, or a USB port so I was stuck.
