Hard drive click on startup! Should I be worried?

I am a little worried about my computer. I was at college for a few days and just got home. I turned on my computer and as it was booting up the HD clicked like three times fairly loudly. Everything seemed to be working fine though. I shut it down and restarted it and it did not do it again. It has never done this before. The drive is an 80 gig Western Digital (link to drive below) and its in a Dell dimension 2400, the drive came with the comuper. I also ran WD's dianostics and it said the drive was fine, no errors came up. Should I be worried about the drive? Do HD's sometimes click like that? I dont know what I am going to do if I have to send the computer back. Maybe I should call Dell? And back up everything I have (which is not too much)...

If it passed WD's tests and works okay, keep going but keep an ear to it anyway.

As Sarge said, if it passed WD Diagnostics, it should be good. It never hurts to backup, just in case.

Ok well good to hear. But to be on the safe side I got a 256 Mb USB flash drive. So I backed up all my Documents, Pictures, and Videos to that. I also put a few small programs in there (Dead AIM) and my internet favorites folder. I then burned all my music (only about 600 Mb's worth) on to a data CD. Good thing I dont have that much because it would have taken a lot longer! I am trying to think of other things I should backup, besides programs (which I need more blank CD's for) I really cant think of anything. Would you reccomend backing up anything else? I think the drive is fine, my computer has been working fine. I guess I will just have to run the dianostic test often and keep and eye on it. But I will also be worrying about it which sucks.

Sounds like the infamous Western Digital click :) But I have never seen a Dell with WD drives, only Seagate and Maxtor. If it is a WD drive you might be able to call WD and do an advance replacement so that they send you the drive first and you can copy every thing over before shipping it back...just a thought!:cool:

i had an older HP that started doing that one day. after about 2 weeks it died. i called tech support and they sent me a new drive. i don't know if it will happen to yours but it did to mine. i don't know what brand drive it was, sorry.
