Hi,

We have this PC at work, just installed windows NT4. I want this PC to join the LAN (workgroup/domain) but I got an error "The domain controller for this domain cannot be located". I've also tried joining a workgroup to no avail. I've checked everything the nic, the cable, the driver everything is fine. Is it possible that the administrator put restrictions in joining the company LAN? I've been doing this everytime my PC got problems and need a fresh install. But now it just won't let me.
Any ideas? Thanks.

If you are attempting to join a domain, first the site must have a domain controller (which is a computer that has an instance of the Active Directory). There are some limitations in compatability, as there are different modes the domain controller can run in to enable advanced features, but to restrict compatability with older Operating Systems.

When selecting to join the domain you will enter the domain name. Ex: mydomain.com, myotherdomain.jpn. You might have to enter the NETBIOS name if the DNS does not have your domain registered. The NETBIOS name is the left-most portion of the domain name. Ex: mydomain.com's NETBIOS name is MYDOMAIN.

Try entering that into the Domain Name field. Once entered it will contact the Domain Controller, and then will most likely prompt you to identify yourself as the Domain Administrator, so you will have to make sure you have permission to add the computer to the domain.

As far as your workgroup problem... I'm sure you're already aware that all computers must be part of the same workgroup, and that a computer who is part of a domain can not participate in a workgroup at the same time.

So a computer called COMP1 and a computer called COMP2 will have to be on the same workgroup, MYWORKGRP. Once the workgroup names are the same you will be able to access shared files/folders of COMP2 by typing: \\COMP2 in your browser or two backward slashes followed by the ip address of that computer.

To share files/folders you right-click on them and choose Sharing and Security. Name share should be followed with a $.

Example: MyShare$
