On my phone system to check my voicemail, I pick up the reciever and wait 5 seconds. I am asked to enter my password and then it tells me my voicemail. Now, whenever I try to connect to the net using my laptop (Xircom 56K Credit Card Modem) I hear the dial-tone but it sounds like static interference. Then I hear the voice telling me to enter my password for my voicemail. This has never happened before. On my other PC I can connect no problem. THe modem on my laptop seems to be working, it is getting the dial tone but the line doesn't seem to recognize it. I have queried the modem and everything came back normal. Does anyone know what the problem could be?

In the modem properties there is an option to wait for a dial tone before dialling. Have you tried deselecting this so the modem dials immediately.

Yeah I have tried that but no success. My modem is actually a bit weird: it opens the port and waits for about 4 seconds and then begins dialling; it has always done this. After it dials it gives out a few long "beeps" and then begins making the handshake with the server. I am considering buying a new modem and seeing does that have any effect....
You need to clear your voicemail before trying to use the modem - so you can get a steady dialtone.

Yeah I've tried disabling the voicemail or at least extending the time you have to wait before it is activated but the telco have restricted all access to things like that. But if that is hte case, how come my other PC is able to connect no problem? I think the problem has to be with the modem as when it listens for a dial tone I can hear one but the modem can't...
