Hey, im moving in about 10 days and i have a question about networking for cable. Im going to have one computer in one room on the second floor, and on the opposite side of the house in the first floor another computer. Is it possible for them to both have cable?

I heard if i get wireless on the second computer downstairs anytime my wireless phone rings i will get dropped. Is this true?

Can someone please explain to me my options i have and what i will need to do?

thanks

edit: when im talking about "cable", i mean getting a having a cable modem connection to the internet

Wireless router and a wireless NIC in each PC. Not neccessairly true about droping. Many thing can affect signal strength of wireless. Distance and obstructions will affect signal strength. Some cordless phones can have a adverse affect on signal strength.

You could get a wireless router that also contains wired ports. Place the router where thecable modem is and I assume there will be a PC there also. It could be wired, in which case it would need a wired NIC rather than a wireless one. The other PC would be wireless and distance and obstructions will determine whether it can work.

I was thinking about just getting a router and have them both wired, my only problem is its a brand new house and i don't want to start going through the walls since they were on opposite sides of the house.

Thanks for your help

In that case, I'd try a combo wired/wireless router and connect one computer wired and the other wireless. Yes, 2.4 GHz phones *can* cause interference with wireless connections, I'd use an old 900 MHz phone, they are very inexpensive now.

If the wireless computer is on the opposite side of the house from the router/access point, you may have signal problems, make sure you get a wireless card that has an external antenna jack in case you have to attach a directional antenna that has some gain.
