hi. im planning on using my old CRT Dell E770s 17" monitor with a new ATI AIW 9600Pro. Since this monitor is about 4 years old, will it noticably hurt performance when gaming and not allow me to use my 9600 to its full potential?
thanks

If there is nothing actually wrong with you monitor, then it doesn't matter. Just make sure you know what refresh you monitor can handle so you don't set the new card too high and potentially damaging the monitor.

Also, Windows can hide the Refresh rate your monitor is unable of handling; Go to:
Display Properties> Settings Tab> Advanced> Monitor Tab.
Just make sure the checkbox asking to hide the refresh rates the monitor can't handle is checked...

I think that works only on identified monitors. For example that option is greyed out on my system, and I think that's because I never installed the INF file that came on the monitor's CD. I'll have to dig out the CD and give it a try, but this monitor is also quite old...

Thanks for the info TwoRails, I thought it worked with all monitors. You may want to try a google search to find the INF file for your monitor rather than hunting for the cd.
Mikezel: Heres the INF for your monitor (You'll need a free DriverGuide memebership to download it though)

Another thing that you might want to check is make sure that the monitor can run at the res that you want. With a 4yr old monitor you should be able to do at least 1024x768.

I have an 8 year old monitor and i am running it at 1152x864 @ 60Hz. The 4 year old one should at least be able to handle that :)
The E770s will run at 1280x1024, 60 Hz refresh, and 1024x768, 85 Hz.

My monitor is 19 years old and supports a maximum 1280x1024@75Hz,so I wouldn't worry!
On a 17in monitor the best resolution is 1024x768,any smaller and you'll need a magnifying glass!
