Hi,

I've made the mistake of offering to replace a fan on a Pentium 2 but am having a hard time finding a P2 specific fan... Can anyone suggest a 'generic' fan I could use?

My likely source will be:

Also - the fan is pretty hard to access so it looks like I'm going to have to take the whole processor assembly out - not having done this with a P2 before I'm a little nervous about it. Is it a relatively straightforward process taking the whole unit out of its slot and, more importantly, getting it back in?

Many Thanks!

You have to determine if it's a SECC or SECC2 style processor and get the appropriate heatsink/fan. Yes, you have to remove the whole assembly from the slot, and how you do it depends on the exact type of retention mechanism it has. It's not difficult, but if you have never done it before, it can be confusing depending how complex the mechanism is. If it's a retail processor, the heatsink is riveted to the cartridge, and on those it's a lot easier to unscrew just the fan and replace it, they are standard 40mm fans I believe.
