I know this has been discussed a lot and I HAVE been reading all the threads on it I could find. I have yet to find anything that works so I need a little help. I recently set up a wireless netweork with a 2wire Homeportal Router/ADSL modem from SBC Yahoo! I have 4 computers on this network.

1: Main machine connected to router with ethernet cable. Windows 2000. all things good, its got internet and file sharing.

2: Win98SE maching connected to router using USB cable. all things good, its got internet and file sharing.

3: WinXP machine connected to router using D-Link Wireless USB adapter. all things good, its got internet and file sharing.

4: Win98SE machine connected to router using Microsoft Wireless USB adapter. all things NOT so good. internet works great but unable to browse network when trying to share files.

As you can see, machine 4 is the problem. Internet is working flawlessly and the wireless usb adapter is getting a 'very good' signal. When I open network neighborhood i see nothing but Entire Network and when I open that I get 'Unable to Browse Netwrok.' I dont know where to go from here. I have installed all of the appropriate services and protocols multiple times including: NetBEUI, Client for Microsoft, TCP/IP and File Sharing.

No computers on the network can see machine 4 in the network neighborhood yet I can ping it successfully through my machine (#1).

Can anyone provide some insight into this? I'm at a loss..

Did you install NETBEUI on all the other computers? How about the configuration of the Microsoft Wireless adapter, I'm not familiar with that one, perhaps there's a clue there?

NetBEUI is installed on every machine except the WinXP machine where there is no option for it.

I looked all through the settings for the microsoft adapter but there wasnt anything that could help.

This seems to me like it is a Win98 problem...but there has got to be some way to fix it.

Oh, one other thing i wanted to point out. On the Windows 98SE machine that is working.. when i boot up and get the login screen it says 'login to microsoft netwroks' but on the Windows 98SE machine that is not working it says 'login to windows' instead. Maybe that is making a difference? I dont know how to get that to change...

Hmm... Check the non-working machine and see if it's using Client for Microsoft Networking in network properties. Perhaps that's the difference.

Oh, BTW, you can install NETBEUI on XP if you have a mind to, it's in the VALUEADD directory on the CD. Also, here's a direct download of the XP NETBEUI files: http://www.onecomputerguy.com/software/xp_netbeui.zip

When you click on that link, it should download the file on the spot, it contains a batch file to move the two files to the correct directories, then you install NETBEUI just like any other protocol.

If you are getting the "login to windows" instead of the network login, you either have Windows Login as default or the network adapter is not properly installed (or defective).

Solved! Thanks for all the help.

Client for Miscrosoft Networking was already installed but i removed it and reinstalled it. After a reboot the login window changed from Windows to Microsoft Networks and it was able to see the other computers and share files :)
