turn off modem speaker

customer's hsf modem with generic soft 56 driver works ok but on the internet there is the constant noise of the internet like the noise when it is first connecting. computer has windows me. is there a code that can be appended to the log which will turn off the speaker? if so can someone tell me how to do it or give me a link?

Did you turn off the modem speaker in the Modem section of Control Panel? That's how I do it to prevent hearing that screeching on connect.

If that doesn't work, in the Extra Settings box, put M0L0 (that's M zero L zero).

I think there was a discussion about this in an older thread. I think both work.
I use M- letter O- L - zero

thanks, i tried turning off speaker volume in control panel modems but it didn't work. i will now try, with great confidence, the M0L0.

MOLO Did Not Work.
I twisted the speaker off the modem with some good pliers. No more internet noise. Works like a charm.

That means that the generic driver is not the right one. I know you have taken care of the issue in your own way, but I'm posting this for the benefit of others that haven't dug out their pliers yet. :D

yes i used M zero L zero. I know it would have been preferable to solve the problem with the correct driver but broadband was down and dialup was all i had.

M zero L zero is M0L0, as opposed to MOLO......that was our point.

i got a question, i have a modem (free AOL omfg they installed so much stuff its annoying) for about a month, and the noise when its connecting is pretty annoying... i dont mind waiting 2 weeks till ill move to the place with the DSL, but till then, just for me to know and disable it, how do i do it ? i dont have MODEM in control panel... running WIN XP PRO, and also, once i get this MODEM tab or w/e... where do i put the M0L0 code ?

hmm.. its not working, do u go to that advanced tab and then the first EXTRA thing theres like a line and u just put M0L0 in there and press ok ? thats what i did, now i tried reconnecting and it didnt work.. u think i need to restart comp in order for it to work ? o well no biggy though, i just wanna learn aswell..

yep, thats exactly what i have.. it might be that we're not talking about the same thing.. im talking about when i hit CONNECT theres this annoying modem connecting thing that always irritates everyone. its still not fixed though, after like 5 times i restarted

M0L0 in there should totally disable the modem speaker *unless* you have a version of AOL that uses its own modem strings. If that's the case, the settings have to be changed within AOL. I just checked AOL 6.0 and it uses Windows settings, there are no strings to edit within AOL. Earlier versions were different.

I don't use dialup very often any more. But I think the only time I had a quite modem was with MSN Internet!

ok.. i did some tests and figured out the AOL crappy prog is using its own modem strings and all.. and man i hate that prog it messes up my comp, my comp freezes everytime i load up more than like 5 progs.. err.. anyways, is there a way i can use like a generic username and pass on a dialer ? i got my username and pass from AOL, including some phone numbers, but it still doesnt work, its like they disdabled it so i cant use those username and pass without THEIR specific program..
any ideas guys ?

Nope, you have to use the AOL software, there's no way to connect generically.

Try Expert Setup and see if you can edit the modem string - insert the M0L0 just before the ^M at the end of it.

where can i find the Expert Setup ? looked all over the file menu.. umm, if this is too much trouble for u then forget about it, i can hold 2 months with this noise till i get back to israel and get my ADSL

There should be a Setup button on the AOL signin screen, that's the only way to get into modem settings that I know of.
