View Full Version : NEED COM PORTS for MODEM

I need to know if I should disable the COM ports in regular WINDOWS or through safe mode. My modem shares IRQ9 with the built in USB's and the only IRq's available are the COM port ones if I am not mistaken. I use a P/S 2 mouse so I have no use for these ports at this given time. Any ways to succesfully attack this issue would be greatly appreciated. finally the more suggestions the better.

Delete one of the ports from device manager, then when you reboot, go into your bios. Find COM, UART, Serial, whatever they're listed by (there should be two), and disable the one you deleted.

I did that a couple of hours ago but the MODEM and the USB's both take IRQ3 and now IRQ9 is not being used. this is very weird that they both leave one IRQ and then take off to another at the same time. PLEASE HELP because I need to get this fixed so that I can install my new LG 8x/4x/32x burner that I just bought. Thanks

Go back into BIOS, and reserve IRQ3 for Legacy/ISA.
Restart.

I am leaving for school right now, so I will try it when I get back in the afternoon. Reboot, should I disable one com port or both and should I set both to LEGACY/ISA. I say this becuase yesterday when I disabled both COM ports the modem and usb's shared IRQ3 but my sound blaster live switched to IRQ4 from IRQ5. I have read the the sound blasters perform better on IRq5. Well I will not jump to conlusions until I try it later. Also can you give me a suggestion on the LG 8x/4x/32x for the install. I mean like set it as a master, slave, software, etc....

My setup:

ASUS A7V
Duron 800
256MB PC-100
E-savage PCI 16MB video
PC-HELL modem
sound blaster live

Thank you for your time!

Reserving the IRQ won't do anything for you. The reason the modem is sharing IRQ with the USB is the slot you have it in. Sounds like you have it in Slot 4 or 5 - those slots share with the USB. The modem *should* share well.

There are a total of 4 IRQ's that can be assigned to AGP, PCI, onboard Ultra 66/100, and USB. With 3 cards, ATA66/100, and USB, something is going to *have* to share. Disabling the com ports won't help, because you already have IRQ 5, 9, 10, and 11 as the 4 available.

Your best option is to pitch the PC Hell modem and get an external serial modem.

GLC has a good point. If you're in this for the long run, ditch that modem and get a good one.
Make sure you install the LG CD-RW as master on the second channel, it's recommended by the mfg, and does work best there, especially for "on the fly" copying.

GLC, REBOOT, you guys are on the money man! I do have that PC-HELL modem in those last slots of the A7V mobo. So I guess no matter what I do I will never have all these components on their own IRQ. Right? Well for the time being I will deal with it becuase like GLC said the USB should share nice, and for the most part it does. Out of ten times that I turn on my PC, about two times does the install wizard open stating that it has detected a new PCI card which happens to be the modem. If I cancel the install wizard and go to device manager, I have no modem. To solve this little problem I just simply reboot and then my PC comes up normal with a modem in device manager. So its not really that bad, but I thought if the issue can be solved then I would ask for help. Well guys If you have time could you suggest some good 56K external modems that are reasonably priced so that I may have any idea at what I am looking at when I get tired of the control wizard popping up.

ALSO I HAVE THESE VERSIONS OF SOFTWARE FOR THE BURNER:

Easy CD Creator V3.5c
Direct CD V2.5d
Version 99-12

Should I run these or can I get free updates from Adaptec since I bought these titles already, and which version are more effective for poeple who just got thier first burner. Thanks

Diamond Supra Express 56e "serial" NOT USB. Any external serial US Robotics.

Those versions of Adaptec are old - but they work. What came with the burner?

GLC,

those versions came with the burner. I picked up the burner at a local PC shop about twenty minutes from my work. I paid $101.00 for it, and it came with two manuals and the Adaptec software. It is a really nice looking drive and I heard good things about it so I decided to get one. So do you know if I could get updates for free from Adaptec or will I have to purchase them? Thanks

Install the Adaptec software, then go get the free upgrades.
Easy CD Creator is one of the easiest to use that there is, but DirectCD can give people fits, so don't worry about the update for it, you'll probably find you'll never use it.
There are hundreds of good audio programs available to help at http://www.audiotools.co.uk and if you want to try Nero or CDRWin, just let me know. I'll find some demo downloads for ya. The adaptec Easy CD should be all you ever need for both data, packet writing, and audio burning.

Reboot,

Last night I Installed the drive and the system recognized the drive without a problem. The thing is that I can't install the Adaptec software becuase I get " AN ILLEGAL OPERATION" prompt. I forgot to write the details of the error but If I use a data cd, the burner works perfect. I have not tried an audio CD because I didn't install an audio cable on the burner nor do I want to. I went to the LG website and they said that VIA chipsets do not support DMA. The ASUS A7V has a VIA chipset and my CD-ROM has always had DMA checked in it's properties. Could this be so? Also it metioned that some older versions of Adaptec wouldn't be recognized by certain burners so maybe that could be it. Well if you have the time can you give me your suggestions over this software issue. Thanks

What are your primary/secondary master/slave relationships? Please post the details of the error message and exactly when it happens.

reboot

You don't need an audio cable to burn an audio CD, it's all done through the IDE cable.
DMA should be enabled, it can sometimes make a huge difference. If it won't enable (try it), then it's possible the Adaptec version you have just won't work.
Go download the updated version from http://www.roxio.com/en/support/winupdates.html
If you installed the CDRW as secondary master, you should be fine.

Guys,

I have the CDRW set up as a master followed by my CD-ROM as a slave on one of the ATA66 IDE ports on the ASUS A7V. When I insert the Adaptec CD sometimes the Auto-run feature works and a window pops up. It contains the setup for both of the programs. Now when I click on either of the programs I get a WINDOWS ILLEGAL OPERATION ERROR- some type of stack dump. The thing is that I am at work right now so I can’t tell you exactly what it is. Other times the auto-run feature will not start the Adaptec CD and then I get some type of AUTO-RUN ERROR. I hit ok and then click on MY COMPUTER to get to my D: drive and double click to start the CD. The problem is after that is when I get that illegal operation error when I try to install the software. Maybe this weekend I will try to install the software from my CD-ROM instead and see what happens. Thanks for your help

Get the CD and burner onto separate channels. Slave the CD to the hard drive if you must.

GLC,

I have the ASUS A7V so I have plenty of space for IDE drives. I have one ATA100 port open with nothing hooked up to it. Also I have been reading that some burners do not like BUS MASTERING and that WINDOWS does a better job of it anyways. If this is true can someone tell me how to disable bus mastering on this mobo. I have drove up north to visit my fiance so I will have to try all these suggestions on Monday night but once again thank you for your help.

Ok guys,

Installed the software through my CD-ROM and everything went fine. I messed a little with Easy CD creator but I believe that I could have made my first coaster? I wanted to try out the burner so I went into CD COPIER (which seemed the easiest) and put a Audio CD in my CD-ROM and a blank CD in the burner. I selected the TEST and COPY bullet because this was my first attempt. I noticed that before inserting the CD's in both drives my burn speed was set at 8X after while it was burning I noticed it had changed to 6X which I did not move. Could your system detect the best possible speed for what your are burning and change it for you? Also since I did a mear copy of a source to a destination CD I noticed that the CD only plays in my CD-ROM. I went into my living room and inserted the CD into my sony DVD player and no go! I go into my room and the CD and CD-RW play it fine. Will I have to burn Audio CD's another way other than CD COPIER? Could anybody let me know what I could do or what not to do. I would really appreciate some input since I am a newbie at burners.

I am using version 3.5C EASY CD CREATOR

I will most likely buy version 4.XX because you cannot get the free updates from version 3.5c

SORRY,

I have also read REBOOT's very informative article but I still could use some advice.

Did you burn a CD-R or a CD-rw? CD-R will play in most players if it's an audio CD. CD-rw will only play in a computer's CD drive [there are a few exceptions like some DVDs]. Don't know the reason for the difference but that's what happens.

I burned a CD-R, but the more I think about it, I beleive that it's just the DVD player being picky. I have no other player to try on except my Pc's CD-ROM. When using CD COPIER I should be able to just clone an audio CD without much difficulty right? Tomorrow I will try on a friends car CD player and see what happens. Thanks for your reply
