i've been having these problems with my optical intellimouse for a while now, and they just seem to be getting worse. the mouse is connected via the usb port, and i've been having freezes or pauses quite often, and then it freezes for good, so i have to unlug it and plug it back in to get it to work.

lately, it'll freeze, and the add new hardware wizard will appear, searching for the driver. using the wizard, i can't find the proper driver, so i just unplug and replug again.

is this a mouse problem, or a usb port problem. optical mice don't just wear out, do they? do i just need to buy a new mouse?

I've had M$ opticals go bad, it's not unusual. Do you have a PS/2 adapter for it to try? Your USB might be flaky.

i've been running it through my ps/2 port for the last day, and while it still hesitates at times, the gaps where it freezes aren't as long as through the usb port connection. is this just a function of the ps/2 port, and if it is still freezing a bit, even if only for a couple of seconds, does that mean the mouse is the problem, and i should get a new one?

I had the same problem with my IntelliMouse with IntelliEye after 2,5 years. Got the MS IntelliMouse Optical then (this was 2 years ago) and so far so good.

You ain't gonna like my recommendation...but as much of a Microsoft fan as I am, Logitech makes a superior cordless optical mouse. My suggestion...throw the M$oft mouse out and get a Logitech.

I agree with Always on this one. I had a Microsoft Intellieye mouse and I had the same problems. I finally smashed it against a wall one day. It didn't fix it, but it sure felt good.

I'm on my third M$ optical, you have the classic symptoms, toss it. I get these for free, if I had to *buy* a mouse it would be a Logitech.
