When downloading an update, does it automatically install itself or do you manually execute? Wondering because if it does so automatically, should I turn off a/v and other programs? I ask because I'm on dial-up, so it will be one of those 'while-I'm-sleeping things.' Thanks.

Leave all the protection on.
ZA may, later, ask about internet access but that should be it.

With automatic critical updates you have a choice of either (a) having windows silently downloading and installing the update (b) having windows silently downloading the update and then asking you before installing it; and (c) having windows ask you before downloading a critical update, then asking you once the download is complete before installing it.
If you use Windows Update, you have to review and start the download manually, after which installation takes place automatically.
Under no circumstance should your antivirus be disabled.

So the a/v won't interfere with the install? Mostly when installing things you're asked to disable a/v to avoid conflicts or problems, so that's why I was curious. Thx.

Games usually have that recommendation and I've done it when installing them, sometimes.
But for XP updates, by the way I have mine set so that they do not install automatically, it isn't necessary.
