Trying to help my nephew over long distance phone calls solve a problem with his new build. Same motherboard as in my sig and similar hardware. There are 4 usb ports in back. No's 3 & 4 are working, 1 & 2 are not. His Sonata case has front usb connectors and they don't work regardless of attaching to the 5 & 6 headers or 7 & 8. In his device manager he has a yellow ! and red X by "Other Devices - Universal Serial Bus (usb) Controller." In my device manager, I show "Standard Enhanced PCI to USB Host Controller" under the USB listings. He does not have that item listed. His XP is an upgrade version newly installed on this system. SP1 and all updates have been added. Any ideas?

the yellow marks is telling you that the drivers for the other usb controlers are not loaded, there is four controlers on the motherboardm and you must have the drivers loaded for each one,
make sure that the inf files were all installed for the motherboard and try reinstalling sp1, something did not go smothe with the setup and all the drivers did not get installed

The motherboard CD says "no drivers needed when running XP....part of SP1." How do I have him check for the proper inf files, bailey?

Try having him install the drivers off of the motheboard CD.
One of the abit boards I have would not install the USB2.0 drivers on XP until I had installed SP1.

usb drivers for xp are not on the cd, but instead are in the sp1 service pack.
the only drivers for usb that are on the cd are the ones needed for w98.
make sure the inf files are installed from the cd for the motherboard cd
same as yours is
