hi folks
am i correct in thinking that once i have built and configured the new board i will be able to plug in my old hard drive, cd writer etc. if so, will the OS work (xp) or will there be other things I have to do to get it all running sweet. Hass

If you are talking about swapping motherboards, I believe so, but if you wait a couple of days I will tell you for sure. I have a PC with XP and I'm going to swap out the mobo and keep HD, CD and everything else. Hopefully the new board will be delivered today.

The procedure may entail a repair installation. but you can try this method...

Since it is XP I am just going to swap the board. I do believe XP will sort things out.
Will let you know how it goes.

I am too, I'll wait to hear how you get on, my parts aren't due till friday and I'm in no hurry to do all the techy bits in the thread, is winxp more or less the same as win2k then. Hass

WinXP might be able to pick up all the new parts on it's own and work fine right from the start. But if you do encounter a problem, you can do a repair of the existing installation from the WinXP CD.

Which I don't have, system was built for me by a friend and the os software wasn't in the package, if it messes up I'm going back to win 98se, it was more photographer friendly, I actually dislike this os. H

In that case, if you want to return to 98, you will need to do a format of your system, and install 98.

Everything is same except mobo. Only thing that worries me is the old one is Epox 8KHA+ with VIA chipset and new one is Asus with Nforce.

Did not go well at all. I did a repair and things came up. Then I messed up. I fired up the mobo CD to load the Nforce drivers for internet and got a msg. about USB 2.0 needing to install. Forgot that SP1 updates USB. Anyway I ran the USB 2.0 update from the mobo CD and installed the Nforce drivers and got on the net.
I then went to install SP1 and the wheels came off. Wound up formatting and doing a clean install.
