i was ask if i would take a virus off a girl friends computer the other day. i agreed and when i got there i found that she had more than a virus.

she has cable internet and uses Kazaa (which has all the spyware and all) i tried to get rid of the 2 virus she had but couldn't. i downloaded ad-aware and spybot to help with all the spyware. ad-aware found something like 900 files before i just got tired of waiting and stopped it! spybot found like 50 files. after i got rid of all those files i tried to get online to download K Lite++ because it has no spyware but the internet wouldn't work. it kept saying page cannot be found. she said it must be her isp because they do down often, so i left.

she IMed me on msn messenger and said it still can't find pages so i told her to un-delete the files i deleted on ad-aware and spybot (using restore) but that didn't work either.

i told her to open my documents and try typing an address in that address bar and it worked. with that working i sent her to the download page for IE 6.0, she installed it but it still wont load pages. any ideas?? she is using WinME, i think 1.3GHz intel, i don't know much else about it but i can get it if you need to know.

What viruses were found, and why couldn't they be cleaned/deleted?

Might want to try this:
1) Use System Restore to a point prior to the Internet trouble.
2) If successful (the Internet access is normal), then disable System Restore, and visit http://housecall.trendmicro.com to scan with their up-to-date HouseCall antivirus scanner. That should catch & remove just about anything. [the reason to disable System Restore during this is that viruses can hide there, and re-infect the system later on].
3) Then run the antispyware tools again, only let them remove everything they find. And make sure she empties the ReCycle Bin and her History files and her Temporary Internet files "All Offline Content" - might as well clean out the cookies, too.

See if that helps
. . . Gary

[it's possible that the System Restore won't work. She may have something like the qhost virus, which disrupts the DNS settings on a computer. That's got to go before things get put back together]

some of that adware/spyware is extremely persistent, and i have seen a few cases where it stops all internet access until it's completely cleaned.

try this thread, there's a few other cleaners that are worth trying. They all have to be up to date. hijackthis is effective.

DragonNOA1, yes it does connect but no pages will load, messenger and all works fine. i'll take a look at the security settings.

GaryRouth, i don't remember the names of the viruses were found, but the AV tried to clean it and delete it but it didn't work.

wintomato, i'll try letting the ad-aware run the whole time.

thanks guys i'll let you know if it works.
