leaving CD in drive

I heard that leaving a CD in the drive can cause damage to the drive, is that true? How could it do that. I ask becaus I always forget to take them out after im done with em.

not so much the drive, but the heat build up could damage the cd

We use Print Shop in one of our computers all the time for doing menus, and never take it out. I mean never. It's been in the computer, never shut off, for at least 5 yrs., and still working. It's just our backup copy too. Well it has been out a couple of times, and the computer has been shut off a couple of times, but never for more than a few minutes.

My wife has some games that load from CD each time she plays them . Been in the drive for about 18 months.

Yea, i can't see it causing serious damage, just the slight heat factor, as mentioned by bailey.

Only problem I know, is it can slow down other things you may be doing,
because the cd drive will constantly be rescaning that cd in order to be prepared to run it

Sometimes I notice that xp boots really slowly with a disk in, even though it is set as a non bootable drive.

I guess it depends on what you define damage as. It does put more wear and tear on the unit as it has to fire up and be scaned that many more times ( on startup, on file searches, on using Windows Explorer, etc).

Unless I know that I will be using a CD with the next computer use, I now remove all disks when I shut down.... it could be a coincidence, but every drive I've had that failed in what I feel was premature manner, it's been a drive where I left a disk in constantly.
