My friend is tearing his hair out! after hooking up a projector to his pc (windows 98) to watch dvds on a wall with, he has ended up with a resized display. the desktop looks similar to when windows runs in safe mode, large icons, low resolution, simple colours etc but without the "safe mode" in each corner and with his usual wallpaper.his programs seem to be running at this display mode also, making life very difficult!

On changing the display properties settings, if we change the colour settings from 16 colours to high colou (16bit), and then move to change the screen area, the colour resets itself to 16 colours again. We change the screen area to more, (1024 by 768 pixels) and do not recieve the normal message (windows will now resize the desktop etc... ...your screen will go blank etc...). Instead we get: " you will need to restart for the changes to take place, do you want to restart now?"
After a restart, there is no change.
He has tried everything i can think of, checked drivers etc, and is threatening to reinstall windows. Can anyone suggest anything to try??

thanks for your time!

Sounds like Windows 98 is not recognizing the projector as a proper monitor or the projector is not capable of that resolution. How are you connecting the projector and what video card does the computer have? What monitor or monitors are listed in device manager?

There was no problem using the projector, the problem has happened after the projector has been used and then disconnected.

Boot the computer into Safe Mode and then go into Device Manager. Find the branch for the Monitor and open it. Remove all the devices except his monitor. You might want to check all the other devices and remove any duplicates and extra entries.
