QuickTime 6.5

I downloaded QT 6.5 recently and when ever I start my system up (XP Home addition), QT shows up in the System Trey. Is there a way to keep it from starting at bootup? I couldn't find any setting or preference that would keep it from auto starting.

First check under programs and startup and if it's in there just right click and delete it, but most likely you'll find it by going to the run box and typing msconfig in there, then click ok. On that little utility that comes up click on the startup tab, last on on the top right, and in there you'll see something about quicktime and a little box checkmarked to the left of it. Uncheck it, apply it, and close that utility down and it will prompt you to reboot, but you can do it later, but the next time you start up you will not have the quicktime thing running. You will get a info box at the next startup that says you have used to msconfig utility to change the system settings, I always check do not show this again and ok it..

Actually, the best way to do it, is to do it thorugh the program. Right click on QuickTime, and go to Settings or something like that. Then, there should be a button that let's you choose whether you want it to open up on Windows bootup or not - uncheck that.

Tell me if my instructions aren't clear - I'll be more than willing to go into my laptop and actually look at it ;)

You must do it through the program. Unchecking it in MS Config does no good. It will come right back. I am not sure of the exact procedure because I do not have it installed for that reason. QuickTime, along with Real Player take over your PC and install programs that run in the background. The only way you can stop the Real Player process is to go into the programs files and rename the .exe file.

Eh, I don't think its the running programs in the background that's concerning, though I didn't really know that. Basically, just check settings to make sure that Quicktime won't start on Windows startup.

The icon he sees in the tray is the QuickTime program running in the background taking up resources and slowing the computer. The Real Player one does not show up in the tray. You can only see it in the task manger. The Real Player takes up more RAM and causes many computers to boot up more slowly. Those background programs are completely unnecessary and until they can clean up there act I will not use their product.

I keep finding that quick time player running on my kids PC everytime they load a new game that also loads quicktime, and msconfig has worked on that PC to keep quicktime from running. He stated he has checked to quicktime software itself for the setting to keep it from running and does not find it, so there may be different versions that run differently, but anyways if you use msconfig and it does not keep it from starting then you know there is a setting somewhere in the quicktime settings that you'll just need to search a little harder to find it and disable the startup on windows option.

Well I just remembered that QuickTime is installed on my other PC and I found the steps to disable this gremlin. In QuickTime go to Edit > Preferences > QuickTime Preferences. In the drop-down menu go to Browser Plug-in and uncheck "Quick Time system tray icon". That will rid you of the icon and "qttask" in the taskmanger as well as free up some resources.
