Someone suggested that its time for a new CD-RW. I'm looking for a second opinion.

I have a 98 OS, and am having problems writing data and music to a CD. My CD-RW is an Acer 4 x 2 x 32. I don't burn very often and so I'm not sure when the problem actually started. The only change in my system in the last 6-months has been a new power supply. I'm getting these errors:
T7303: Trackwriter error -undefined or invalid parameter
T7118: Trackwriter error-command retry failed
D0100: I/O error (05/21/00) -Disc error -requested address is out of range
D0100: I/O error (05/2C/00) -Command error - commands not issued in sequence.

I stick by my original diagnosis.

If you really want to try to pin this down, there are 2 things I would try:

1. Completely uninstall the old Adaptec software. Download the demo version of Nero from here:

ftp://ftp4.nero.com/nero551054.exe
or.....
ftp://ftp3.us.nero.com/nero6303.exe

Install it and try a burn. If it works, go buy Nero (which will cost you more than a new burner) or try reinstalling Adaptec.

2. If possible, try your burner in another computer.

Not trying to give you a hard time, but for $32.25 you can get a burner that will burn a whole CD in 3 minutes (and comes with Nero Express) instead of the 20 minutes it takes you now even if you get the old one going. If you had a 12x or faster with "burnproof" buffer underrun technology, then we would look closer at repair avenues.

I'm not holding out too much hope - I remember the Adaptec software and old 2x through 8x burners - when those D0100 errors start coming up, the burner is usually shot. Brought a Ricoh back to life by disassembling it, greasing the head carriage rails, cleaning the center puck with alcohol, and dusting off the lens, but at today's prices, my time is worth more than a new burner. Back then a replacement would have been $200 so it was worth a shot.
