Can You Use Win2000 Task Manager In Win98

Would anyone know if it would be possible to copy Windows 2000 task manager into Windows 98. Windows 2000 task manager is very helpful because it tells you exactly how much system resource ram is being used by each program. I know some people using Windows 98 whose computers are running very slow and who have only 64 megabytes of ram. Windows 2000 task manager used for Win98 could help tell them which programs are using the most memory they need to shut down on startup.

I haven't heard of this being tried before - but I'll take a look around just in case. My first inclination would be "probably not possible" - since Win2k is based on the NT kernel, and Win98 is based on the Win95 kernel.

There is the Win98 builtin utility called "System Resource Monitor" - but all it does is report the current status, it doesn't break the information down by program. Perhaps more useful for your Win98 clients would be visit to http://www.pacs-portal.co.uk/startup_content.php for an overview of the situation. There are programs like "Startup Cop" and "Startup Control Panel" available at places like download.com, too. At least it gives the users a rational view of the situation, and helps eliminate needless misunderstandings about throwing extra memory at things as a cure-all.

However, on the hardware side of life, Win98 is never all that quick with only 64mb of system memory. More system memory won't help their resources problems, but it will keep the system from heading to the hard drive as often. About $20 should land 128mb of compatible memory for a Win98 era machine, and improve performance across the board for many apps. Performance on a 1998-era box is going to have other limitations, too, the slower hard drives, graphics card, etc.

Good luck, I'll post anything I find on the compatibility of the task manager tool sometime tomorrow - I haven't found anything mentioning Win98 compatibility on first look.

Ram and resources are 2 totally different animals. 98 uses resources (operating system "heaps") and 2K uses physical ram.

I just want to mention that in the past I thinnk I transferred Windows 98se msconfig over to Windows 2000 to see if it would work and it did.
