Drive Image 7.0

Hi to all,

I am wondering if anyone can help me with a question that i have, regarding the Powerquest/Symantec product Drive Image 7.0?

Firstly, my computer is an Athlon 2000 based system, set up as a dual boot Windows XP Home and Windows 98SE.
And the memory is 768MB of RAM, with two internal hard drives of 80GB and 27GB, partitioned off as below.
All systems are in FAT32 mode.
I also have a USB cable linked 80GB external drive, which holds all of my backups.

The question is about my system and Drive Image 7.0, and the amount of time it takes for this product to make a drive image.
The times are below:

(These drives are the smaller partitions on my main computer hard drives)

XP image - Time taken for image - 5 hours 4 mins.
This included the create, validate and verify the image, and it was made with High compression (50%)
Drive size - 15.8 GB - Used space - 8.42 GB - Free space - 7.41 GB

98SE image - Time taken for image - 6 hours 1 min.
This included the create, validate and verify the image, and it was made with Medium compression (45%)
Drive size - 14.6 GB - Used space - 7.74 GB - Free space - 6.89 GB

Backup 1 image - Time taken for image - 5 hours 52 min.
This included the create, validate and verify the image, and it was made with Medium compression (45%)
Drive size - 14.1 GB - Used space - 7.49 GB - Free space - 6.68 GB

Can anyone please tell me if these times are correct, or am i doing something wrong?
I know about the compression features of Drive Image 7.0.
As i am trying to put two images onto one partition on the external drive to save space.

Also if possible, does anyone know any answers to the following questions as well?

1. If i use no compession for the images, will the image be saved as the same size of the drive it came from?

2. If i restore the image i made of my XP drive for example, will it take 5 hours 4 mins to restore it?

I have sent a message to Powerquest/Symantec about this, but i have heard nothing back from them yet.
And i bought this product for the USB facility.
As i was using Norton Ghost, but i found out that it can cause problems with USB if the wrong drivers are used.

I hope that i have explained my problem properly, and thank you in advance for any help.

I don't use Drive Image, but that sounds like an awful long time.
I can make an image, with Ghost, of about 12G's in roughly 10 min.

Those times are very long... I expect them to be longer with high compression, but IMHO, those times boarder on ridiculous.

USB 1.1 or USB 2.0?

If it's 1.1, that would explain a lot. Try creating an image on a local partition and time it.

polik Being able to create a .pqi file to an external device and doing it fast may be two different issues.

I use Drive Image 2002 on my Windows XP system. It creates a .pqi file about 1 min/GB of used partition space. I always use high compression. But I don't validate or verify. I also create the image to a drive in the computer. It takes about half that time to restore.

I have two images of my C:\ sitting in my computer. About every two or three months, I'll commit an image to CD. I never toss out any images on CD.

I back my data with regular data burning. My data doesn't change radically.

Thanks for the replies, and glc i am using USB 1.1 for the connection between my computer and the external drive.
And i would try to make an image on a local drive, but unfortunatly i don't think i have enough space to image a drive.

I was using Ghost 2002 for my backups, but because it would not work with USB.
I decided to use the Drive Image program.

USB 1.1 explains the slowness then. Consider a USB 2.0 card if your external drive is 2.0 capable.
