I've read all the sticky's but I still don't have a clue. I want to have two pc's to share one broadband connection. One has windows 98 and the other has XP pro. Do I need network cards for both pc's and how do I know if the motherboard can take one is it just a case of putting it into a general PCI slot? Also if your modem doesn't have an ethernet slot does it mean that I cannot share a conection even with a router?

Easiest way is thru a router. I do believe they sell routers that will hook to the USB port of the modem in the UK. Then put a NIC in each PC and connect with a straight thru cable to the router.

If not, you can use ICS if the WIN98 PC is SE and not FE. To use ICS would require a NIC in each PC with a crossover cable between the two.

If you use ICS, I'd connect the modem to the XP box, sharing works a lot better. You will still need a network adapter in each machine, and you would use a *crossover* type Ethernet cable to connect them together. The client can be ANY operating system that is capable of seeing a DHCP server, even 95 can do this with the Winsock 2 upgrade.

When the heck are the ISP's in the UK going to stop forcing USB-only broadband modems on their customers? {/RANT}

what is "ICS" and is a network card compatible with any mobo's if so what would you recommend (router and network)
also because of my modem being only usb will I need two new modems or will I just need one modem between the two pc's

Internet Connection Sharing (ICS). Just the one modem. Hook the USB to yout XP box as George suggested. Put an Network Interface Card (NIC) in each PC. Use a crossover cable between the two PC's.

Again router is easiest. Connect modem to USB of router (get a router that supports USB) and connect each PC to router using a straight thru (patch) cable. Would also require a NIC in each PC.
