Router "choking" bandwidth speed

My router seems to be "choking" or "bottlenecking" my cable broadband connection, especially on upload.

Granted, I'm using a cheapie Linksys Network Everywhere router but it's rated speed of 10mbs/100mbs should be plenty fast given my connection.

My average speeds are (router/without router):

Recieve - 1500kbs/1500kbs. About the same either way. A wash.
Upload - 50kbs/240kbs. A significant difference & easily repeatable.

Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Look at the Linksys website for a Firmware Upgrade, they had problems with their routers and XP. Be aware that they also have had this problem with firmware upgrades. My Linksys started running slow after my Roadrunner Provider (Brighthouse) seemed to have done some upgrades. Firmware update did nothing, so I solved the problem with a Netgear Wireless setup from Costco that was $107.00 including a WIreless access point.

I tried updating the firmware to no noticable effect....

I guess that's what I get for buying a router at Wal Mart for 30 bucks.... Lowest common denominator performance!

I'm also willing to bet that the thing is simply set up wrong. Unfortunately the website isn't a bunch of help either.

What sort of specs/features should I be looking for?

Even the older Linksys routers had nothing in the way of setup unless you were entering custom entries.
Like I said a couple of months ago my router was just going nuts after five years, downloads would start really fast then taper off to dial-up speeds. I just ditched the router for a new one.

Guess that makes sense... anything that costs 30 bucks new has gotta be low/old tech.

Once again, just shows you get what you pay for. Too bad I lost my receipt & chucked the box!

Although slightly off-topic, I found the 8 port linksys router with QOS caused a significant bottleneck on my network... ended up returning the POS (and no it wasn't the config since I disabled all QOS on it)
