1. i would like to change both the dell logo that appears while my system is doing POST, and then the windows splash screen while it boots. the dell logo i have no idea how to find it to change, but from what i've found out, the boot screen is a file called logo.sys in the windows folder. all i'd need to do is properly size an appropriate bitmap image, name it logo.sys and replace the original. trouble is, i don't have a logo.sys file in windows, can't find it searching for it, and it doesn't seem to be on the win98 cd either. i do have the logow.sys, the wait screen while windows is shutting down, and the logos.sys file, the shutdown screen. but no logo.sys.

i browsed my folders using paintshop pro, and couldn't find either the dell logo image or the windows boot splash image in any folder on my computer, but they have to be there somewhere, right? and if the boot screen isn't the logo.sys file, what file is it?

the second question came about as i was browsing in paintshop pro. it was able to find many image files in my temporary internet folder, and yet, i had just deleted everything in that folder today. furthermore, when i browse using explorer, there are all sorts of folders shown in the folder tree, named with various combinations of letters and numbers, that when i click on them, are shown to be empty. but paintshop found image files in them. and when i open the temporary internet files folder in 'my computer', i don't even see these folders, the window is empty. also, if i right-click the folder and select 'properties', it shows that there's thousands of files in it totalling about 500MB.

is this normal, or have i screwed something up so i can't get to these files to delete them? if not normal, how do i fix this?

I think these might help,

This will take you to a download for tweakui which should allow you to change the splash screen and many more fixes.

Explains how to restore an older version of the registry.
Hope this helps.

How do I restore an older version of the Microsoft® Windows® 98 registry?

Restore a Backup Copy of the Windows Registry

Additional Information

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Boot to MS-DOS

Reboot the system and hold down the <Ctrl> key until the StartUp menu appears.

Use the down arrow key to choose Safe Mode Command Prompt Only.
Press the <Enter> key.

At the C:\> prompt type the following command: cd c:\ and press the <Enter> key.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Restore a Backup Copy of the Windows Registry

To restore a backup copy of Windows registry, perform the following steps:

From the C:\> prompt, type the following commands and then press the <Enter> key after each command:

cd\windows\command
scanreg /restore

Use the <Down Arrow> to select the date of the registry you want to restore.

NOTICE: You may need to reinstall any software that was installed on the system after the date of the registry restore that you selected. For example, if you installed a software program on 9/1 and you restore a copy of the registry from 8/31, that software program will need to be re-installed. Likewise, any system settings changed (such as Screen Saver, Wallpaper, or Themes) since the registry restore date, will need to be changed again.

You probably want to choose the most recent date when the computer was last functioning properly.

Once you highlight the date, press the <Enter> key.
After a brief pause, you should receive the message: You have restored a good registry.

neither of your answers helped any.

first, i don't want to install some other guy's logos, i want to change them to other images of my own.

second, i know how to change the windows boot screen, as i mentioned in my first post. you change the logo.sys file. but i cannot find a logo.sys file on my computer. and yet, i still have a windows splash screen. what gives?

third, i have no clue how going back to a previous registry version is going to fix either of the questions i have. if you were under the impression that something has gone wrong on my system recently, then you're wrong. it's just i don't understand how under 'my computer', the temporary internet files folder is empty and yet the properties tab shows there is 500MB worth of files in it, in the explorer tree there are folders in it, but those folders are empty, and yet, when i browse those folders using paintshop pro, it shows me thumbnails of image files that are(supposedly)in those folders. reverting my registry back a week isn't gonna change that.

Look at no.four. It says you can make your own logo system file if you don't have one Plus I think you could do no harm if you used tweakui in the repair section ,for instance it has system file repair ,temp internet file repair , etc.

The Windows splash screen is an image file just like any other. Well, not exactly like any other -- its extension is .sys. (Image files usually have an extension such as .jpeg, .tif, or .gif.) It's easy to replace this screen with one of your own.

If you want to replace the clouds with your own beautiful picture, follow these steps:

Make a bitmap image at 320x400 pixels. Your image should look squished when you make it, because it will stretch out to 640x400 when actually displayed.
Change the name of the original file to logo2.sys so you can save the original Windows splash screen for posterity, in case you change your mind.
Save the new file in your root directory (C:\) as logo.sys.

4.)" If there is no logo.sys on your computer, feel free to make your own."

This is all I can think of to help.If this doesn't help you could try google or microsofts site .

Before pulling any more hair out in frustration, make sure that you are able to see all files in Windows Explorer, since the Windows Splash screen is hidden by default (strange, but true). [. . . I should perhaps also mention that if Windows doesn't find a Logo.sys it will re-create one at boot. . . ] (Windows Explorer/Tools/FolderOptions/View . . . "Show All Files" to make the hidden files visible)

The Dell screen is possibly in the bios itself, but I'm not sure on that one (you could simply call Dell and ask). On many such OEM machines, there is a Bios option to display or not display the OEM screen: which enables you to view the usual POST screens with all the device information. To change that screen, you'd probably need to contact Dell support [might be a tweak somewhere on the Dell forums though]

Regarding the PaintShop Pro finding pictures . . . see if you can bring up a "Properties" on any of these - have they been set to "hidden"? If so, and you're pretty sure you didn't put them there, might run an antispyware/antitrojan program just to make sure you haven't been hijacked. AdAware and Search&Destroy get recommended a lot. Widely available at many sites, like download.com & all

Best of luck
. . . Gary

yeah, i ran the system file repair in tweakui and nothing changed. as far as i know, teakui will only disable the splash screen, not replace it with something else.

as far as making a new logo.sys file. obviously, if i can't find a logo.sys file, then it must be somewhere else, as i obviously do have a windows splash screen at bootup, or some other file name for my splash screen. why i couldn't find them in paintshop pro, i don't know, unless as was suggested, they're loaded in the bios, and not windows. so 1. i'm not sure if i renamed another file logo.sys it would replace the splash screen, and 2. if i should screw something up by doing so, and want to restore the original screen at some point, i won't be able to as i don't know what or where it is.

as far as hidden files go, i have the option checked to show hidden files, so that's not the issue. i still can't figure out why they don't show up.

i opened paintshop pro to check and see if i could view any image properties, and i could view "image information", but that had more to do with the size, resolution, etc. i did discover though, that i could hold down the shift key and select them all, and then delete them, so i guess i'll have to go through each folder one by one deleting all the temp image files within them.

that sounds like it's gonna be fun.

I'm still puzzled why you can't see those files in Windows Explorer, yet you can with PaintShop. . . I'll have to check around on that. Do you usually use User Profiles with that system? And if you look in that applet in the Control Panel, are any setup? [. . . and, of course, it's not possible that PaintShop is looking at a similiarly named folder in the ReCycle Bin rather than the original location?]

If I find anything, I'll relay the info

i suppose that could be a reason. currently, i am set up so that all users use the same settings, but it hasn't always been that way. but i was looking over some of the images, and some of them seem fairly old, while others are ones that were from a while ago. can't remember if they were from when there were user id's on the system though.

it's not the recycle bin either, as it's been emptied several times over the last week or so.

It's an intriguing situation = and I do remember seeing a few things about Temporary Internet files that didn't get emptied (when a User empties it from the Internet Options menus), and that weren't visible - - but I haven't found it again yet. I've been kinda busy [have a very nice family visit happening for the next few days] . . . but I promise to pass along any information I find

Besides, I'm curious too

bios splash screens can be replaced . You will need a bios edit utility. I don't know of one off hand. sorry. You need to make your logo to match both fit and file size of the bios splash screen, and if I remember right you just replace the original with your own creation.

Then replace your old bios with your edited one.

You make a logo.sys file and put it in c:\windows, when it sees it, it will use it instead of the default splash screen.

Without hacking the bios, the best you are going to be able to do is go into the Dell bios and disable silent boot. This will reduce the Dell logo to a small one in the corner of the screen and show the POST info.

Not sure but this site has a solution or two...many links available if you run a search for "changing your splash screen."
