how to create a network between windows xp and 2000 Professional:confused:
You need two NICs (one in each PC) and a network cable. And then just connect the two NICs.
Also unless you have Gigabit Ethernet make sure that you get a crossover cable, otherwise it won't work.

The Cat5 cable that you most likely have is what is generally referred to as patch cable. What RJ says is correct, if you are just wanting to connect two PC's you are going to need what is called crossover cable. The difference is that the conductor pinouts are configured that enables direct NIC to NIC data transfer. I bet a boatload that you have patch cable but need to get crossover cable. Ask at your local Office Depot or Staples or Best Buy, Fry's ect...get the floorperson and specifically ask for crossover network cable. When you are sure you have the right cable, then post back and we'll be more than glad to assist. There is another way to do this that adds some additional flexibility. That is to invest in an inexpensive 10/100 hub, possibly a 4port for expansion. Then you can use the cable you have now, but would need one more to go from the second PC to the hub. This is a better setup than direct cabled, IMHO.

Connect both PCs. Now that's basically it.
If you want to play games on LAN, no other actions are necessary. . except maybe installing the IPX protocol. Start the game, choose network and it should work.
If you want to share folders with the other PC, then share a folder and the other PC will be able to access it the way you specified it.
You can go to "Network Neighborhood" or "My Network Places" (I think they changed the name since WinME but I'm not sure), then entire network, microsoft windows network, and there you cann see the workgroups, and inside the workgroups are PCs.
You can specify the workgroup by right clicking on "My Computer", go to the "Computer Name" tab, and click on change. There you can give the PC and the workgroup a name. It doesn't matter which name you give it, it's just that they have a name, and that name will show up in Explorer.

Easiest way to network a XP box to a 2K box is run the home networking wizard on the XP box and make the disk, run the disk in the 2K box.
