This question is coming from someone who is very novice in computer operations. I know to push the red button and the thing turns on among other basic operations. I recently installed a d-link 604 router for our DSL that is currently networking one computer and a PS2 video game with no problems. My problem has been with the second computer, honestly i can't even tell what kind it is because it came to us second hand but it is old enough not to have a ethernet port. The computer has windows XP pro installed. I purchased a d-link ethernet adapter to install in this computer and went about the installation process through the device manager (computer did not auto-detect, 1st red flag in my mind). The device description always read "device is installed but cannot run code 10. D-link said this code was stated it was not properly installed. After several tries at installing and several hours on the phone with d-link they told me to return the device and try a new one. So i returned it and purchased a Linksys adapter hoping for better luck. Once again no auto-detect and when i go to the device manager to install the computer still shows the d-link device even though i unistalled what was there in safe mode. The computer will not detect the linksys adapter at all. I have tried switching the "ports" inside the computer that the adapter fits in and running the install discs even though the instructions say it is not necessary since XP already has the drivers. This project has wasted far to much of my time but is necessary for a happy home. Anyone have any ideas? thanks in advance.

Can you post your system specs, especially the type of motherboard? If you don't have that information readily available, then you can use a utility like SiSoft Sandra to bring it together.

Have you successfully deleted the D-Link device from Device Manager?

I will try to get that info together tonight. I clicked on the uninstall option for the d-link adapter from the device manager but after installing the linksys i had it search for new hardware under network adapters and it showed the dlink adapter there even though i had uninstalled and physically removed the device from the computer. Thanks for your response.

What was the installation sequence in the directions? Install the card and then run the install disk? Sometimes, as is the case with some 3Com network adapters, there is instruction to install some pre-installation files before installing card.

You should be able to install new driver from Device Manager by clicking on Update Driver and point to the install disk. Drivers for your OS should be in one of the disk folders. I almost never let a piece of hardware search for the driver. I always, at least initially, install the drivers included with the hardware.

Hello all, forum n00b here........excellent sight.
Had no intentions of hijacking this thread just couldn't justify starting new one on same basic topic.

Does anyone have the GA302T Gigabit Adapter by Netgear
up and running on M$ XP Pro ????

Just purchased one and received failure to install driver error:
system unable to find specified file. *Edit* Manually installed
drivers & received unable to run code 10. On reboot system
requested product software/insatalled it and all flags/errors
removed. Local area connection icon shows packets sent & received but have no throughput as IE6 reports it is unable to display page when connected.

Having spent more than several hours going over Netgears
online troubleshooting guides(their version of 24/7 support),
they concluded the need to boot into dos mode(not an XP option)
and run CD's diag.............used 98se panic disk(for comedy relief) which was counter productive.

Netgear does suggest using crossover cable with some modems,
as it works fine with my Realtec RTL8139 i don't think so.
MSI KT3 Ultra mobo sports 5 32-bit 3.3v/5v PCI rails. Have tried
different slots to no avail. Adapter/modem lights fully active.
Terayon TJ715 cable modem with Adelphia Power Link as provider.

*Re-Edit*
Customer brought over his Athlon Gamer for Virus fix & hardware upgrade. After repartition/format & fresh install of 98se, i gave the Netgear GA302t a go under 98's OS. Same scenario, but rather than physical install i just had to bicker with MS as to location of file. Same unable to display page message. Upon reboot into MS Dos mode i discovered the cd has no diagnostic setup/proggy.
Obviously time to RMA this puppy.

Anbody have any clues and or suggestions:confused:

Dryadsoul: My professional recommendation is not to buy Netgear cards, I have never had good luck with them. If you want gigabit, stick with the top tier manufacturers such as Intel and 3Com or buy motherboards with onboard gigabit.

For cheapie 10/100 such as JR408 is trying to get going, we currently use D-Link DFE-530TX+ cards. We used to use Kingston till they went out of the nic business, then switched to Linksys. Had some issues with the Linksys LNE100TX, so we went to D-Link. If you can't get either one of those going, you have an underlying problem. If you want to try a different nic, find one with the Realtek RTL8139 chipset, this seems to be the "standard" in cheap chipsets these days and is compatible with every OS under the sun. This said, if I'm not mistaken, the D-Link uses this one.......???

If all else fails, there's the 3Com 3C905, but it ain't cheap.

glc: Thanks for your speedy reply & professional opinion. I'm currently running an RTL8139 with no problems & no drivers required under XP Pro. Netgear will be RMA'd tomorrow and
exchanged for the Intel Pro 1000 MT Desktop that i had originally intended to purchase........guess with adapter cards you do get what you pay for. Thanks again for your help.

JR408... If you are still showing the Dlink on your system, try to uninsatll it from add/remove programs in the control panel.
