Being based on the Win2k kernel, and not 95/98/ME, it should be a really nice OS.

I like that it is based off of Win2k base, which is very stable. But, I really don't like the GUI, they are trying to make the entire system look like a big Flash animation. I just hope they don't bloat it with useless features, just for the sake of having "new" features. Just a few thoughts.

They're gonna use some sort of hardware id number stamp instead of product keys, though. Which translates into you having to call M$ to get permission to change your mobo and processor?

An OS based on win2k with gaming performance and stability like win98 plus SMP support would be perfect, be great to see it turn out that way.

Xayd has also has a good point though, plus how much are we gonna have to shell out for this? Remember how much win2k cost? Depending on the price I may not even buy it, and just use linux and win2k.

the funky flash-looking interface is just one of many possible interfaces. it also includes the older style windows interface. and it has the ability to use skins, so you can customize it.

Sorry there Floppydude, no SMP support for the "home edition", but there will be a professional series with SMP.

DrZaius, don't worry. What you see now of Whistler GUI only is a new desktop theme.
I also don't like it very much, many things look like Win3.11. . .

There's also the windows standard theme :)

And besides that ugly fat new start menu the nice standard one also is in whistler :)

Got a couple of thigs to say.
From all accounts, all versions of XP support SMP. Not 100% on that though.
If you havn't used it, then don't bash the interface. I love it, and it makes computing a little less duller. Grey is out.
I am running Windows XP with an office XP beta on top. Can you say stable, and thay fit together ncie.
I also tink this is more than just an upgrade to Windows 200. They are merging the lines, no more two kernals. It will be eaiser for people to write programs, and more features can be implemeted.
Oh, and the Product ID, if you check the XP FAQ, you will see that it has been tested, and allows for upgrading very easily. Go check it out on their site.

Hmm, I can't even install office XP on my win2K box (and it's an official corporate beta. The installation is crashing on a permission problem. The only solution I found so far is to install everything from scratch.

Will MCSE tests change to meet the XP settings?

I don't think that XP will be for servers. It is really oriented towards user friendly home/work use and is just one step before .NET. I think Win2K Adv. and Server will be the MS server OS for a while.

Actully Dr. Ziaus, Windows Xp in Windows.Net, just like Office XP is office.net. I think Microsft changed the name to be less confusing. I am running an all.net interface, Windows, Office, and Visual Studio. Looks great together. I am pretty sure XP is .NET.

You are correct in that XP will be able to use .NET, but .NET services are not yet available. Also, there is no (or won't be) a .NET operating system or applications (like Office.NET), .NET is just a "service" that will provide software and automatic updates through the net.

Floppyman: Only official testers are allowed to use and preview the Beta releases, but everyone who wants to use it has found a copy one way or another (mainly FTP sites).

.NET is a new way of developing applications. It has a lot of features that can be compared with java. You compile your applications to platform independant IL (Intermediate language). When the application is executed a JIT (Just in time) compiler will compile the IL code you are using to machine code (optimised for your system, not like the current win32 code which is still optimised for 386 computers). Another feature of .NET applications is that they are NOT com applications (so no registry usage, no more dll hell.)

Then for what is expected in the future.
Windows XP and Office XP is NOT windows.NET and Office.NET (I am positive about this because nothing .NET related is integrated in those applications + one of the microsoft guru's assured me.).

Windows XP is just the next version of Windows 2000. There will be a Windows XP Professional, Windows XP Server, Windows XP Advanced Server and Windows XP Datacenter Server. (I'm sure, I saw the XP Advanced server on the latest MSDN session)
