at my house (where i live with some other students) we have a lan with a linux box as a proxy-server.
because of the physical set-up of the house (i.e. architecture ;) ) i still have part on a bnc connection. one of the people on the bnc is running win98se.
when opening his network neighbourhood he gets an error message stating that the network can not be searched.
i can ping him but he can not ping me
he can ping the server ad himself but when he tries to ping me he gets a time-out.

When I try to access his shared folder I get an error message //HISPC not accessible network path not found”

I know win98se sometimes needs some time to register the lan, but we have been trying for some time now, it should be up.

Give him a static IP with appropriate gateway and DNS, see if that helps.

Got any spare BNC nics? Have you tried installing NetBEUI on all the workstations to rule out TCP/IP issues?

i will have to check the netbeui, the thing is that his internet connection with runs thru te same lan is fine, so phisicly everything is ok (in my view, witch is limited i confess)
and everything used to work just fine, we changed nothing in the setup.

i have some spare bnc nicks, but they are isa and would have to be tested(lucky the pc in question still has isa slots), so i'd rather not go down that road

Internet connections don't need NetBios (at least they shouldn't, this is a security issue) but LAN connections do. TCP/IP could be working fine, but NetBios may be broken. Installing NetBeui gets around this.
