alright, a friend called me over to check out his computer which would not go past the login screen. he is running windows 2000 sp3. he said the problem started when he installed avg. i started the computer in safe mode and took off avg and it worked fine. so i installed avast, because his computer was riddled with viruses. when i restarted, same thing. so i went back into safe mode, and there is no uninstall in the avast folder. so i go into add/remove programs, but it wont open. i can click as much as i want, but nothing. so i can't remove avast, and i can't get in to the computer normally. any suggestions would be appreciated

From the avast website:
http://www.avast.com/i_idt_1336.html
Instructions for using their own uninstall utility for either version of the software.

The viruses that are on his hard drive are possibly causing this.

The info regarding the uninstall utility on the avast website specifically mentions the problem he's having...
It's certainly worth a shot.

yeah, i am going back this afternoon to check it out. thanks for the link. he just called me last nite and said that he now can not even login in safe mode, which really worries me because we could always get in that way. and from what i have seen of 2000, there is no system restore. so now he is really in a bind. thanks and hopefully we can get in and use that info.

still no luck on getting in, safe mode is doing what normail mode was doing. is there a repair feature with 2000, like there is on xp? otherwise, i will have to do an over-the-top install, because he needs the data on that computer. thanks a lot

Yes, boot up into Windows 2000 setup and choose the repair option, or you can just do a "over the top" installation.

Sorry to hear that hobey19. Yes, there is a repair option with Windows 2000 setup.
Good luck,

if the repair installation didn't solve anything, I'm afraid reformatting the HD was the only thing he could do.

he didn't try the repair, he just went ahead and reformatted. i hadn't told him about repair yet.
